Coach Weir is truly the reason I’m at Stanford. His character both as a coach and a person in general attracted me to this school and the track program here. I’m a current athlete on the team and I’m losing a good coach and a great friend. He’s always been a guiding light showing me the way to my goals. Beyond helping me make strides towards my own goals he’s just been amazing. I can’t help but remember all the people who have, not knowing Robert, been terrified of him and the number of times that he’s smiled and in doing so shown how human he is. He commands respect from his athletes as well as others he meets and is not afraid to return it. Stanford is uselessly losing a fantastic asset and is pushing away one of the best things that has happened to its track team in a while. He offers more than 13 years of experience and Olympic medals and national records. The athletes new to the program are missing an amazing opportunity to train with him and the returning athletes are losing an outstanding friend and mentor.
